The Maple Review exists to identify and dismantle the barriers to entrepreneurship caused by economic deprivation. Through research, lived experience, stakeholder collaboration and storytelling, the review aims to make enterprise accessible to everyone, regardless of starting point.
Spearheaded by Small Business Britain, with backing from the UK Government and supported by Xero, The Maple Review aims to make enterprise accessible to everyone, regardless of starting point, through research, close consultation with entrepreneurs with lived experience, and engagement with policymakers.
The Maple Review has uncovered the barriers that prevent individuals from starting or scaling a business, due to economic deprivation, and set out practical recommendations to drive positive changes.
The research stage drew on a national survey, regional roundtables, and contributions to the Call for Evidence, through which entrepreneurs shared their own stories and organisations submitted existing research and data for consideration.
The full report, including actionable recommendations for central and local Government, the private sector and more, was launched on 1 January 2026 and is available to read in full here.
